How do I identify a movement?
Every watch enthusiast will know what a plate is: the movement plate that holds everything together. Among other things, the winding mechanism and the wheel and hand train are mounted on this plate. Holes and cut-outs indicate where something belongs. The plate thus becomes a plan, a map of the watch.
If you want to know which movement is running in your watch, you should first look at the bridges, then at the lower edge of the main plate. If there is no corresponding engraving, the next area to look at is the area around the balance. The manufacturer's hallmark (punch) and calibre number are often hidden under the balance ring. On smaller movements, it may only become visible when the balance cock including the balance is removed.
